As a purchasing manager for a major Canadian lumber yard, he recognized the untapped potential in Calgary's high‑end market, particularly for heritage homes in Mount Royal. Leading to Banbury Lane's inception in April 1986.
Over the Years
Initially offering a diverse range of products, including plumbing and home decor, Banbury Lane pivoted in the mid‑nineties to focus exclusively on curating the finest collection of global decorative hardware brands.
Continuing the Legacy
In 2002, Peter's son Jon Howell, having grown up in the business, took the reins as his father retired. Jon embodied Banbury Lane's ethos of exceptional service, elevating the company from supplier to trusted partner for designers, builders, and home owners. His commitment to lifelong customer supportset a new industry standard.
Resilience Through Change
As success grew, so did competition. The team responded by reinforcing their brand identity, emphasizing their design expertise to stand out from imitators.
2010 marked another transition as long‑term partner Lynne Drover considered retirement. The search for a successor who shared Banbury's values led to Cam Varner, a former employee who had briefly explored corporate roles. Cam's return in 2013 injected fresh energy into the business.
Facing challenges, including the 2017 oil market downturn and the pandemic, Jon and Cam chose to innovate rather than retreat. They expanded their high‑end offerings, modernized internal systems, rekindled partnerships, and embraced e‑commerceto adapt to changing market dynamics.
