Interior Door Hardware Buying Guide

Interior Door Hardware Buying Guide

Our door hardware buying guide is a great tool to ensure the door hardware you purchase from us not only fits your projects aesthetics, but also your doors...

There are a number of things to consider when purchasing door hardware outside of style and finish. There are some technical pieces of information we will ask you, here is a primer for what to expect. Not all of this info will apply in every situation, but most of it will.
1. What is the function?
All doors serve a purpose, the hardware enables that purpose.
Passage: Interior door hardware that does not need to lock, like a laundry room or kids bedroom.
Privacy: Interior door hardware that does need to lock, like a bathroom or primary bedroom
Dummy: Interior door hardware that is fixed and does not require latches, like double closet doors in a bedroom.
2. Door Preparation
Is your door new or existing? Does it have holes in it?
Below is the standard preparation for interior doors in Canada. If you have something different than this please connect with our sales team and we can walk you through your options.
Note: We carry several options that require special door preparation so this info is critical.
Note: We will always let you know if what you are looking at requires special door preparation.
3. Backset Measurement
Measurement?..." I didn't think there would be math involved"
Rest easy, the backset refers to the length of the latch required. This measurement is taken from the edge of the door to the center of the hole drilled on the face of the door. This measurement will be either 2 3/8" (60mm) or 2 3/4" (70mm).
4. Handing (Door Swing)
This one is often done wrong, but it's simple, here is how we like to think about it.

If, when facing the door, from the outside (hallway side), the hinges are on your left, the door has left handing. If the hinges are on the right, the door has right handing. This is true regardless of which way the door swings.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, however this should address any of the questions we will ask you for any online door hardware purchases.

If you have any questions please connect with our team.
